While anticipation continues to build across western North Dakota, recent construction updates suggest the project still has significant work ahead before gaming floors open to the public.

Located in White Shield on the Fort Berthold Reservation, the development represents one of the largest tribal gaming investments currently underway in the state. The casino is being developed by the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara (MHA) Nation, also known as the Three Affiliated Tribes, and is designed to serve as both an entertainment venue and a long-term economic development project for the community.

Although earlier reports floated the possibility of an early 2026 launch, that timeline has quietly shifted. More recent updates indicate construction remains ongoing, with tribal leaders continuing to describe 2026 as the target opening year without narrowing it to a specific season or month. Officials have not released information regarding staffing, licensing milestones, or a soft-opening schedule, leaving many observers expecting additional announcements later this year.

Once complete, the first phase of Son of Star Casino is expected to include approximately 37,000 square feet of gaming and entertainment space. Current plans call for around 200 slot machines, table games, a poker room, a sportsbook, a restaurant, a coffee shop, a gift shop, an entertainment space, and a campground. Future expansion plans include an 80-room hotel, event center, convenience store, and additional recreational amenities.

Even without an official grand opening date, Son of Star remains one of the most closely watched tribal casino developments in the Upper Midwest because of its potential to create jobs, expand tourism, and generate additional revenue for tribal programs.

Other North Dakota Casino Projects

Unlike many neighboring states, North Dakota’s local casino industry is almost entirely tribal. Instead of large commercial casino companies competing for licenses, gaming expansion generally occurs through investments made by federally recognized tribes operating under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.

The MHA Nation already owns and operates 4 Bears Casino & Lodge in New Town, which has served the region for decades with slot machines, table games, live entertainment, lodging, and dining. Son of Star will effectively become the tribe’s second major gaming destination, expanding its footprint while serving a different portion of the reservation.

Elsewhere across the state, tribal casinos continue investing in renovations and property upgrades rather than pursuing entirely new developments. Properties including Spirit Lake Casino & Resort, Sky Dancer Casino, Dakota Magic Casino, Prairie Knights Casino, and Grand Treasure Casino remain the backbone of North Dakota’s gaming industry, offering a mix of casino gaming, hotels, restaurants, and event facilities.

While neighboring states have increasingly expanded commercial casinos and online gaming, North Dakota has maintained a measured approach. The state’s gaming market continues to revolve around tribal casinos, charitable gaming, and the state lottery, with no commercial casinos currently operating.

If Son of Star opens as expected, it will become one of the newest casino destinations in the region and could help strengthen tourism throughout central North Dakota while creating additional employment opportunities for tribal members and nearby communities.

Online Casino Options In North Dakota

North Dakota does not currently regulate real-money online casino gaming. Residents can legally purchase lottery products and participate in other authorized forms of gambling, but lawmakers have not approved statewide online slots, blackjack, roulette, baccarat, or live dealer casino platforms operated within the state.

As a result, many adults who want to play casino games online choose internationally licensed offshore casino sites that accept North Dakota players. These sites typically offer significantly larger game libraries than retail casinos, often featuring thousands of slot titles, dozens of blackjack and roulette variants, baccarat, craps, poker, video poker, jackpot games, and live dealer tables streamed from professional studios. You can learn more about online casino gaming options for ND players here: https://onlinenorthdakotacasinos.com/

While offshore casinos are commonly used by U.S. players, they are not licensed or regulated by the State of North Dakota. Anyone considering these sites should verify licensing information, review bonus terms, understand the risks involved, and always gamble responsibly.

BISMARCK, N.D. — Efforts to expand casino-style gambling in North Dakota are meeting renewed opposition from tribal leaders. The Spirit Lake Nation warns that proposed changes may threaten tribal sovereignty and economic stability.

State lawmakers and gaming advocates are considering broader casino development, including online gambling, which could generate significant new revenue. However, tribal nations, central to North Dakota’s legal gaming, argue that expanding beyond current agreements could undermine the balance between state authority and tribal rights.

The Spirit Lake Nation is a leading opponent of statewide casino expansion, maintaining that tribes should remain the primary gaming operators in North Dakota. Leaders warn that commercial casinos or online gambling could weaken tribal economies, which rely on casino revenue to fund essential services such as education, health care, and infrastructure.

Ongoing discussions in Bismarck reflect a broader national debate on how states should regulate the evolving gambling industry while honoring longstanding tribal gaming compacts.

Online Casino Options For ND Players

Although online ND casinos are not authorized under current state laws, residents can access offshore gambling platforms that operate outside U.S. regulation. These sites offer convenient alternatives to land-based casinos, including slot games, poker, and live-dealer options available on smartphones or computers.

Industry analysts report that offshore casinos attract thousands of North Dakota players by offering user-friendly banking options and larger rewards and bonuses.

Supporters of legal expansion argue that a regulated online casino framework could help retain gambling revenue in the state and provide additional safeguards for players. They cite states such as New Jersey and Michigan, where online casino markets have generated significant tax income.

However, tribal leaders in North Dakota caution that a state-led online gambling market could reduce tribal casino profits. Spirit Lake Nation officials stress that any online gaming system should include tribal involvement and respect existing compacts.

“The tribes have been the foundation of gaming in this state,” one tribal advocate said. “If online gambling moves forward, it must be done in a way that respects that foundation, not replaces it.”

Tribal Casinos in ND

Tribal casinos are the primary and legally recognized gaming institutions in North Dakota. Facilities operated by tribes such as Spirit Lake, Standing Rock, and Turtle Mountain provide entertainment and generate critical revenue that supports tribal communities.

The Spirit Lake Casino and Resort is a key economic driver for the Spirit Lake Nation, providing jobs and funding for local programs. Tribal leaders emphasize that casino income is directly linked to the welfare of tribal citizens.

Under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, tribes operate casinos through compacts negotiated with the state. These agreements have historically limited gambling expansion while ensuring tribes can maintain control over gaming within their territories.

Tribal officials warn that allowing commercial casinos or broad gambling initiatives could disrupt this structure. They are concerned that outside operators may draw customers away from tribal facilities, weakening the financial base that supports tribal government services.

The post Spirit Lake Nation Against North Dakota Online Casinos first appeared on Online North Dakota Casinos.
